Remember how we talked about advertising with Google Ads in a previous post? Well, through our good friend Joey, we learned that you can do the same thing on Facebook, Hurrah!!!! So we did create our Facebook ad.
How We Advertise Our Website, part 2
“Preneur” is the new “suffjective”
I have learned in the past weeks so many new words: innerpreneur, musepreneur, epreneur, agripreneur, seniorpreneur, mompreneur, blogpreneur, solopreneur, micropreneur, crowdpreneur…
So can I make my own word now? How about OMGpreneur!!!
Business Plan 2.0
We had assembled a traditional business plan but we felt it did not do justice to our coworking vision. Because coworking is all about image, experience and atmosphere, we realized that describing it just with words would not be good enough. We decided to take a different approach and write a different kind of business plan.
Crowdsourcing, meritocracy and coworking: Say what?
I just realized that I had been reading and talking about crowdsourcing without knowing it (remember cooltownstudios). I’m not the best at describing impalpable things and I get even worse when it comes to new social theories and concepts. I bet that if you read our blog you are already educated about coworking and most likely about crowdsourcing, but in case I’m wrong, allow me to quote:
-
Jeff Howe’s White Paper Definition: “Crowdsourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call.”
-
Jeff Howe’s Soundbyte Definition: “The application of Open Source principles to fields outside of software.”
Where do you get that from?
Our interest for coworking started in Spring 2008. There are many factors that led us to consider the possibility of starting our own coworking space. Some of these factors are consequences of our personal situations and some factors come from reading, networking and listening. Because we think you could enjoy consulting the following references too, let us present three of our most important sources of inspiration.
How We Advertise Our Website
Well, if you are looking for an answer, you are in the wrong place. We don’t know. But we needed to advertise our site and get traffic coming our way. And here’s what we are doing to promote our site to the public.
There are pages and pages on the Internet, it seems impossible that anyone finds anything. That’s why search engines exist. It was our first stop. Search engines, such as Google and MSN Live, provide users with a form to submit your own site’s web address to their web crawlers. Once the crawlers have hit your pages and picked up meta-data, your site will appear in the search results. In addition, Google ranks the sites by popularity. The more popular the site is, based on number of visits, the higher up the site will appear in the results page. Sac-coworking.com used to appear on the fourth page of the search based on “Coworking Sacramento” keywords, but it has moved up and is now the third result listed. The goal is, of course, to reach first place.
WordPress and Themes
The current version of this website is not the first one that we’ve had. We actually started with our own design, writing CSS code from scratch. It was all nice, simple and cool, but we wanted to add some complex functionalities such as the blogging page and the contact us form. So we started to look at WordPress.
We downloaded the app on our web server and started to play around with some free themes. Oh boy! Good thing we know a little bit about PHP and CSS. The free themes are not very user-friendly. Code is not commented at all, it’s not indented right… a real pain. But this is what we had achieved:
The Survey
As we have mentioned before, the coworking project is in development stages. We have a strong concept written out, but no financing. In order to obtain enough funding to move the project to the next step, we need your help.
The investors like the coworking idea, but we have yet to convince them of the demand for coworking services. We have created a short survey to collect hard data from Sacramento market, which we could later on provide to the potential investors.
Please, help us out by taking this survey, which should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. Your input is greatly appreciated.
The Web Site
The idea was simple: create an informative site where people could get information on what coworking is all about, who we are and how we are doing on the project. I mean, how difficult can it be? Well, quite a bit, as it turns out.
We wanted to have several functional pieces, such as the ability to leave comments, contacting us through an email form, and a quick way to update the pages and posts. We, like most people of our generation, have designed our own sites before, but, unlike a professional site, a personal site could be “good enough”. But good enough for this site was not good enough.
Project Kick-off
After months of talking and preparing, we are starting to work on the coworking project in a serious mode. Many challenges lie ahead (lack of experience, money, time, etc.), but it will only make this journey oh-so interesting.
We plan to use this blog to provide you with a step-by-step description of our struggles and successes. We also hope that you, the reader, will participate by giving us some feedback and suggestions.
